Talking About Suicide

posted on
I came across another website that is working to reduce stigma related to mental illness. Its focus is specific to suicide. Suicide, whether it is completed or not, is a very upsetting topic. This blog, TalkingAboutSuicide.com is a collection of interviews going back to 2011 with people who have personal experiences with suicide. The blog's author intends to provide information, and document experiences people have. Most are attempt survivors.

We work a lot on CBT skills as a way to reduce anxiety, increase relapse prevention, and improve mood. We also have groups on Mindfulness which can provide the same results. Here is a link to an article about how both CBT and Mindfulness can work together to help us manage when we find ourselves with an unexpected and/or stressful event. The author describes mindfulness as a way of cultivating resilience. What a great word. We would like to see ourselves as resilient--able to bend and toler...

The Art of Savoring

posted on
Here is my dog, Opal, with her morning treat. Every morning, after my husband gets out of the shower and gets dressed, he and Opal go to the kitchen and she gets her snack. Following are five steps for managing a conflict in a healthy way. It might be helpful to have this list printed out for both parties to refer to. Pay special attention to the last step.

Do You Know What a Standard Drink Is?

posted on
Controlled drinking can be difficult if you're not sure what a "drink" is. Just like Americans have a hard time knowing what 1 serving of their favorite Ben and Jerry's ice cream is (a half-cup or 1/4 of a pint), we also have a hard time knowing what is a serving of alcohol is.

Violence--Anger May Be the Key

posted on
As you know there was another shooting at Fort Hood recently. Looking at how it was 'spun' we first see anxiety and depression listed as possible causation, but then the discussion changed to there being an argument which prompted the violence. I thought that was very interesting. The average person doesn't think of anger management problems in the same way they think of a mental illness. And, it seems unfair and inaccurate to assume anyone with a mental illness is potentially d...

This was an article I wrote for South Meridian Magazine and thought I would also share it here as many of you are parents and might benefit from the information: In an effort to learn how to be more effective with children, I decided to interview a colleague, Trina Fisher, to talk about her work with children. Trina is a licensed clinical social worker in Eagle, and works with young children to help them cope with various issues.
